Reverse gear pin basics
A reverse gear pin locates the reverse idler or gear on its shaft, holding the component in the correct position for engagement. Because the pin carries the load of the reverse gear each time the transmission is shifted into reverse, it is worth inspecting whenever the gear set is opened.
When replacing a pin, check the hole it seats in for wear or elongation, since a loose fit can let the gear shift out of mesh under load. On older Jeep transmissions, the reverse pin is often replaced along with the reverse idler, the thrust washer and the snap ring, so inspect those parts together.
