Sealing the SR4 joint
A case to adapter gasket seals the joint where two housings meet, so the sealing faces need to be clean and flat before the new gasket goes in. Remove old gasket material carefully with a plastic scraper rather than gouging the metal. Check that the faces are free of nicks and rust, because small surface flaws can cause seepage even with a new gasket.
Transmission gaskets are often replaced together with the input shaft seal, bolts and any other parts disturbed during the same job. Keep the bolts clean, and tighten them in a crisscross pattern so the joint seats evenly. Fluid leaks after the first drives often trace back to a surface that was not cleaned properly.
