Sealing the shifter opening
The shift cover gasket compresses between the cover and the transmission case to keep oil inside and dirt outside. Once the cover is removed, the old gasket often stays stuck to one surface. Scraping it off carefully helps the new gasket seat flat and prevents a leak that is hard to trace later.
Old gaskets harden over time, and a cover that has been bent or warped will leak even with a fresh gasket. Check the cover edge with a straightedge and look at the case mating surface for nicks. Tighten the cover bolts evenly so the gasket compresses without distortion. Fresh gear oil after the job helps confirm the seal is holding.
