Before you rebuild
Transmission gaskets seal the joints between case halves, covers and extensions, and they are usually the first part to fail when a gearbox begins to weep. On a T86 the gaskets must hold lubricant while the shafts turn and the case flexes with temperature changes. Because opening the case already costs time, most rebuilders replace every gasket in a kit rather than reuse ones that have already taken a set.
Before disassembly, clean all mating surfaces with a non-abrasive pad and remove old sealant without gouging the aluminum. Check the faces for warping or pitting, since a new gasket cannot seal a damaged surface. Dry-fit each gasket to confirm it lines up with bolt holes and oil passages before applying any sealant the service manual calls for.
