Replacing an upper grommet
An upper grommet sits between the shock and the mount, cushioning vibration and keeping the shock from rubbing metal. When it hardens or splits, noise and vibration can reach the body. Replacing it is a quick job that restores the cushioning.
Check the grommet and shock eye for cracks before installing a new one. Clean the mounting surface, and confirm that the grommet seats fully into the mount so the shock sits square. Inspect the rest of the front shock hardware while the grommet is out, including the bolts and washers.
Worn shock mounts can also affect alignment feel and tire wear, so inspect them when the grommet is replaced.
