Drum shoe replacement
A drum brake shoe carries the lining that presses against the drum to slow the wheel. As the lining wears, the shoe gap grows and the brake pedal can feel low until the brakes are adjusted. Before fitting new shoes, inspect the drum for scoring, cracks and out-of-round wear, since a worn drum will wear a new lining quickly and cause pulling or noise.
Shoes are usually replaced as a set on each axle, so the lining wears evenly. Check the wheel cylinder for leaks, the springs and hold-downs for wear, and the adjuster for smooth movement. Clean the backing plate and lubricate the shoe contact points lightly, keeping grease off the lining. After fitting, adjust the shoes so the lining contacts the drum evenly.
