Rebuilding the rear drum brakes
A shoe kit replaces the friction surfaces that wear against the drum, along with the small hardware that holds the shoes in place. Before installing new shoes, measure the drum and check that it is smooth and round, because worn drums can cause new lining to wear unevenly. Springs and hold-down hardware should be checked for stretching or heat damage.
Inspect the wheel cylinders and the adjuster while the drums are off, since a leaking cylinder can soak new lining within a short time. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate lightly, and keep grease off the lining. Adjust the shoes to the drum once the assembly is complete, then road test the brakes at low speed before normal driving.
