Hold down hardware and shoe seating
Hold down hardware clamps each brake shoe against the backing plate so the shoe stays in position as the drum turns. If the hardware is weak or bent, the shoe can rock, rub the drum or wear unevenly along its edge. Inspect the springs, pins and cups whenever the backing plate is removed, and check that each part sits flat before reassembly.
Front drum brakes see heavy use from steering and braking loads, so seating problems tend to show up as a pulling sensation or a squeal on one side. Check the shoe linings for uneven wear, clean the backing plate of old dust, and avoid greasing the shoe contact pads. Replace any hardware that shows heat discoloration or cracks, and confirm the shoe moves freely after installation.
