Dana 35 rear drum service
The Dana 35 rear uses drum brakes whose shoes are pushed outward by a wheel cylinder on each side. Because the shoe pair works as a unit, both sides should be inspected together, even if only one side has a visible problem. Check the lining thickness at its thinnest point and look for uneven wear.
Heat from repeated stops can glaze linings and weaken springs, so inspect the return springs when the shoes are removed. Clean the backing plate and anchor pads, and lubricate only the contact points. Confirm the drum is smooth and within its wear limit before reassembly, and keep the new set in matched pairs across each axle. Test the brakes gently at low speed after the first installation.
