Idler pulley wear signs
An idler pulley guides the serpentine belt and keeps it at the right angle around the drive. On a 2.8L diesel Liberty, the right idler pulley sees constant belt load, so its bearing is the most likely part to wear. A rough or noisy idler often shows up before the belt fails, which makes it a good time to inspect the whole drive.
Spin the pulley by hand with the belt removed. It should turn smoothly without grinding, wobble or play. If the pulley feels rough or sticks, replace it. When the idler is replaced, check the belt for cracks and glazing, and confirm the belt still tracks straight on the pulleys after installation. Torque the mounting bolts to the factory value.
