Sealing an older transfer case
Seals in older transfer cases harden with age and heat, and the intermediate shaft seal is one of the points where leaks tend to start. Once the seal dries out, oil can creep along the shaft and collect on the housing. Because the seal rides on a shaft surface, any groove or rust on that surface will shorten the life of a new seal.
When replacing the seal, clean the sealing bore and inspect the shaft for grooves or rust. Install the new seal square to the bore and avoid nicks from tools. Refill with the lubricant the service procedure specifies, and check for weeping after a short run.
