Replacing sprocket bearings
Sprocket bearings carry the drive load from the main shaft, so their condition matters for the whole transfer case. Rough rotation, play in the shaft or a gritty feel when turning by hand all point to worn bearings. Replacement is usually done as a complete set so that both sides wear evenly from that point forward.
A bearing installed with incorrect preload can overheat or wear the gears early. Measure the preload carefully and set it to the value your transfer case needs, then recheck after a short test drive. Clean the bore and shaft seats thoroughly, and keep bearings protected from dirt during assembly. Lubricate each bearing lightly with the transfer case fluid as it goes in. Replace the seals at the same time, since the teardown already exposes them.

Vehicle fitment
It fits the 1984–1985 and 1987–1995 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), 1989–1992 Jeep Comanche, 1984–1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ), 1980–1988 Jeep J10 and J20, 1980–1990 Jeep Wagoneer (SJ) and 1987–1995 Jeep Wrangler (YJ), with trims for each model.
The Grand Cherokee (WJ) from 1999–2004, the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) from 1993–1995, the Wrangler (TJ) from 1997–2006 and the 2002 Liberty (KJ) fall outside the fitment above. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
Two bearings are needed, so replace them as a pair when the sprocket is serviced. Sprocket bearing work calls for transfer case disassembly and correct preload, so experienced hands are the usual route.
What’s included
Two bearings are needed per transfer case.
Not included: The sprocket, shaft and other transfer case internals are not part of this item.
