Description

Overview

The Power Stop Autospecialty B538 is a set of rear drum brake shoes for the 1990–2000 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), 1997–2000 Jeep Wrangler (TJ), 1990–1995 Jeep Wrangler (YJ), 1990–1992 Comanche, the 1987–2002 Dodge Dakota and early Wagoneer models.

Designed for professional installers, the semi-metallic shoes are post-cured for more brake power and a shorter break-in period.

Key features

  • Made of 100% new steel with a rust-resisting black coat
  • Asbestos-free and copper-free
  • Semi-metallic and post-cured
  • Chamfers intended to assure noise-free braking
  • Precision arc ground for proper drum fitment
  • All hardware included
  • Designed by Power Stop to meet or exceed OEM specifications
  • 3-year/36,000-mile warranty

Replacing rear drum shoes

Rear drum shoes press outward against the inside of the drum to slow the wheel. As the friction lining wears, contact patterns change and the brake can begin to pull, feel soft or make noise. Inspect the drum for scoring or out-of-round wear at the same time, because a worn drum can wear new shoes unevenly. Self-adjuster parts and springs should move freely when the shoes come off.

Semi-metallic linings handle heat well and suit trucks and Jeeps that tow or carry loads, though they can be harder on drums than softer compounds. Bed in new shoes with a few moderate stops before relying on full braking, and fit both sides of the axle together so the wheels brake evenly.

  • Lining thinner than the rivet heads
  • Heat blue or deep grooves on the drum
  • Leaking wheel cylinders or sticking pistons

The 2001 Cherokee and Wrangler TJ years after 2000 are not in the list. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

The shoes come with all hardware. A rear drum brake job on a Jeep is a good time to check the drums and wheel cylinders, since worn parts shorten shoe life. The semi-metallic shoes are post-cured for a shorter break-in, and the black-coated steel resists rust once the shoes are in service.

Questions & Answers

Does the Power Stop B538 fit a Jeep Wrangler TJ?

Yes, for 1997–2000 models. It also fits the 1990–1995 Wrangler (YJ) and the 1990–2000 Cherokee (XJ) with these rear drum brake shoes.

Is the B538 for front or rear brakes?

It is for the rear drum brakes only, so they are not made for front brakes. Fit them on the rear axle when replacing worn shoes.

What does the B538 include?

The set includes rear brake shoes and all hardware, so no separate hardware kit is needed for the shoes themselves. Check the package contents against your installation before starting.

Does the B538 fit a Dodge Dakota?

Yes. It fits the 1987–2002 Dodge Dakota, along with several Jeep models including the Cherokee, Comanche and Wrangler, for the years shown above.

How often should rear drum shoes be replaced?

There is no fixed interval. Inspect them at each brake service or tire rotation, and replace them when the lining is close to the rivets, the drum is scored, or the pedal feels soft or pulls to one side.
