Gasket sealing and replacement
A valve cover gasket compresses between the cover and the head, and uneven compression lets oil seep out at the edges. Most leaks trace back to an aged gasket, a warped cover flange, or bolts that were not tightened evenly. When the gasket is replaced, inspect the sealing surfaces first.
Clean the cover and head surfaces to bare metal with a solvent that leaves no film. Set the new gasket in its channel and check that it sits flat before fitting the cover. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern in stages. Check the spark plug tube seals and the oil fill cap at the same time, since they often leak alongside the gasket.
