Replacing a worn transfer case seal
Transfer case seals work at the points where a shaft leaves the housing. The lip rides on a polished surface and holds lubricant inside while the shaft turns. Heat, age and road grime slowly harden the rubber, so a seal that was once tight can start to weep fluid, especially around the output shaft area of the case.
When a seal is replaced, the shaft surface matters as much as the seal. Look for grooves, rust or a flattened spot where the lip has been running, because a new seal will leak quickly on a damaged surface. Install the seal square to the bore, with the lip facing the lubricant side, and fill the case afterward to the correct level. Dragging the old seal out with a pick can damage the bore, so use a proper puller.
