Driveline vibration and wear
A U-joint works through the angle between the transmission and the axle, so wear shows up first as play in the cross and bearing cups. A joint that is not lubeable has no grease fitting, which means it relies on its original lubrication and seals. Watch for clunks when shifting from drive to coast, vibration at speed, and a squeak or grinding from the joint on turns.
When replacing the joint, match the series and cup dimensions to the old joint and check that the yokes are not bent or worn. Replacing one joint without inspecting the other ends can leave a driveline out of balance. Re-check the strap bolts or snap ring retention after the first drives, and make sure the driveline angles are correct before returning the vehicle to heavy use.
