Signs the belt needs replacing
A serpentine belt drives the accessory components on a Jeep engine, so a failing belt affects more than one system at once. On the 2.5L and 4.0L engines, a belt that slips can reduce charging and cooling performance, and it can also squeal under load. Because this belt is made for non-A/C engines, the routing is simpler than on engines with air conditioning, but the belt still wears from heat and age.
Inspect the belt with the engine off. Look for cracks across the ribs, glazing that makes the surface look shiny, and fraying at the edges. Turn the engine by hand and watch for the belt riding off the pulleys. Replace the belt before it fails on the trail, where a broken belt can leave the engine without charging.
