Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive J8136618 is a brake master cylinder for early Jeeps. It fits the 1959–1960 and 1966 CJ3, the 1959–1966 CJ5 and CJ6, the 1966 CJ5A and CJ6A, and several Willys CJ-2, CJ-3, CJ-5 and CJ-6 years. Its mounting holes are not threaded, and the bolt-hole centers are 3-1/2 apart.

It is a direct-fit replacement.

Key features

  • Replacement brake master cylinder, direct fit
  • Both mounting holes are not threaded
  • Bolt-hole center to bolt-hole center is 3-1/2
  • Covers CJ3, CJ5, CJ6 and Willys models

Checking the hydraulic side

A master cylinder works with the brake lines, the fluid reservoir and the pedal, so a new cylinder affects the whole system. Before fitting, inspect the lines for kinks, corrosion and seepage at the fittings. Old fluid that has absorbed moisture can also affect braking, so drain and replace it along with the cylinder.

Unthreaded mounting holes are held with through hardware, so the mounting bolts should be snug and evenly tightened. Check that the pushrod lines up with the brake pedal linkage before bleeding. Pedal feel after installation is a good check that the cylinder seats and the system is free of air.

  • Inspect brake lines before reinstalling
  • Use fresh brake fluid throughout the system
  • Confirm pedal travel before driving

Questions & Answers

Are the mounting holes on the Crown J8136618 threaded?

No. Both mounting holes are unthreaded, and the bolt holes are 3-1/2 apart, center to center. The cylinder is held with through hardware.

Which Jeeps does the J8136618 fit?

It fits the 1959–1966 CJ5 and CJ6, the 1959–1960 and 1966 CJ3, the 1966 CJ5A and CJ6A, and Willys CJ-2, CJ-3, CJ-5 and CJ-6 years.

Is the J8136618 a direct-fit part?

Yes. It is a direct-fit replacement, so it is designed to bolt in where the original master cylinder was without modifying the vehicle.

How do I tell the master cylinder needs replacing?

Common signs include a soft or sinking pedal, fluid around the cylinder body, and fluid loss without leaks found elsewhere. Check the lines and fittings first, then replace the cylinder if the problem remains.

Does a new master cylinder need bleeding?

Yes. Bleed the brake lines after installation to remove air, starting at the wheel farthest from the cylinder. Keep the reservoir topped up during bleeding so air does not return to the system.
