Description

Overview

The Rough Country 501084 is a 3.5 inch GM lifted N3 front strut for trucks and SUVs from 2007 to 2014. It is a direct fit for the front position. It fits the 2007 to 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche, the 2007 to 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the 2007 to 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, the 2007 to 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2007 to 2014 GMC Yukon.

This strut only fits vehicles with 3.5 inches of lift and does not fit 2007 Classic models. It is designed to replace strut spacers on lifted vehicles only, so it is not a stock-height upgrade. It cannot be installed together with a strut spacer.

The strut is nitrogen charged with a pre-loaded coil, so the factory strut can be removed and replaced without strut disassembly. It has a massive bore, a chrome hardened piston rod, a leak-proof piston seal and a variable dampening system, which improve handling and tire contact with the road.

Key features

  • 3.5 inch lift for GM trucks and SUVs with a lift
  • Replaces strut spacers on lifted vehicles
  • Pre-loaded coil for installation without strut disassembly
  • Massive bore and chrome hardened piston rod
  • Leak-proof piston seal
  • Variable dampening system

Lift height and spacers

Ride height on a lifted GM truck is set by the struts, springs and any remaining spacers, so changing one part can shift the whole front end. A strut built for a specific lift height keeps the spring and damping in a predictable range. Mixing it with spacers or with a different lift height changes the geometry and can alter steering feel.

Front alignment is generally needed after the front end is raised, and the tires should be checked for wear as the angles settle. Related components such as the sway bar end links, the tie rod ends and the brake hoses are often inspected when the front is lifted, because their positions change.

Check the strut mounts and the upper bearing at regular intervals, and listen for clunks over bumps. Oil on the strut body or a loose, bouncy ride are signs the unit needs attention.

  • Confirm the existing lift height before installing
  • Schedule a front alignment after the change
  • Inspect sway bar end links and tie rod ends

Questions & Answers

Does this strut fit a 2007 Classic Silverado?

No. It does not fit 2007 Classic models. Check the model year and body style on your truck before choosing this strut.

Can this strut be used on a stock-height truck?

No. It only fits models with 3.5 inches of lift and is designed to replace spacers on lifted vehicles, so it is not intended for stock-height trucks.

Does this strut cover the Tahoe and Yukon?

Yes. It fits the 2007 to 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2007 to 2014 GMC Yukon in the named trims, along with the Avalanche, Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500.

Why does a strut for one lift height not suit another?

Each lift height changes the spring and damping position and the suspension geometry. A strut sized for one height can change steering feel and wear if used at another, so match the lift before installing.

Can I keep a spacer with a lifted strut?

Usually not. Spacers add height on top of the factory strut and change how the spring loads. Remove them before fitting a lifted strut so the lift is set by the new assembly alone.
