Description

Overview

The Rough Country 501070 is a 3 inch front N3 lifted strut for the 2009 to 2013 Ford F-150. It is a direct fit for the front position and is gas charged. It fits the FX4, King Ranch, Lariat, Lariat Limited, Limited, Platinum, STX, XL and XLT trims. The shock series is N3 Performance.

This strut is designed for trucks that already have 3 inches of lift, and it replaces strut spacers on those vehicles. It only fits models with 3 inches of lift. It cannot be installed with a strut spacer, so a lifted truck that still has a spacer needs the spacer removed first.

Each strut is nitrogen charged and comes with a pre-installed coil spring, which allows installation without strut disassembly. The N3 design has a massive bore, a chrome hardened piston rod, a leak-proof piston seal and a variable dampening system.

Key features

  • Replaces strut spacers on trucks with 3 inches of lift
  • Pre-installed coil spring
  • Nitrogen charged, gas charged design
  • Massive bore and chrome hardened piston rod
  • Leak-proof piston seal
  • Variable dampening system

Lift and spacers

A front strut sets the ride height and controls the spring’s movement over bumps and under braking. When a lift is built with a spacer, the spacer adds height on top of the factory strut, which changes how the spring loads and how the suspension geometry behaves. A purpose-built lifted strut replaces that arrangement, so the lift and the damping are designed to work together.

Other front components should be checked when a front lift changes. Sway bar links, control arm bushings, brake hoses and the steering components can all be affected by a change in ride height. Front alignment is usually needed after installation, and the tires should be checked for uneven wear.

Over time, look for oil on the strut body, a bouncy ride, or a clunk over bumps. These signs indicate that the strut needs inspection.

  • Remove existing spacers before installation
  • Check sway bar links and bushings
  • Schedule a front alignment after the lift

Vehicle fitment

It fits the 2009 to 2013 Ford F-150 in the FX4, King Ranch, Lariat, Lariat Limited, Limited, Platinum, STX, XL and XLT trims.

The strut only fits models with 3 inches of lift, and it is not meant for stock-height trucks. Other F-150 model years are not on the list. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

The strut cannot be installed together with a strut spacer. Remove any spacer on the truck before fitting, because the strut is designed to take the place of the spacer.

Questions & Answers

Will the 501070 fit a stock-height F-150?

No. It only fits models with 3 inches of lift and is designed to replace strut spacers on trucks that are already lifted. Check the front lift on your truck before choosing it.

Can I run this strut with the spacer still in place?

No. The strut cannot be installed with a spacer in place, so the spacer must be removed for this strut to fit.

Is this strut for a 2014 or newer F-150?

No. The strut covers 2009 to 2013 Ford F-150 models only, so 2014 and later trucks are not included. Confirm your model year and trim before choosing this strut.

Do I need an alignment after a front strut swap?

Usually yes. Changing the front ride height alters the suspension angles, so an alignment is typically recommended after installation. Have the tires checked for uneven wear at the same time.

What are the signs a lifted strut is worn?

Look for oil on the strut body, a bouncy ride after bumps, nose dive under braking and cupped front tire wear. Any of these suggests the strut needs inspection or replacement.
