Before installing the seal
A firewall seal works only when the surface around the heater motor opening is clean and free of old foam. Old adhesive, dried sealant or bits of foam can stop the new seal from sitting flat. Take time to remove them before fitting the new part, since a small gap here can let water and noise into the cabin.
On a Wrangler YJ the seal sits near the heater wiring and the blower motor plug, so take care not to pull on the wires. Many owners replace the seal while the heater motor is out for other service. Check the seal fully seated at the end, and look for gaps at the edges.
