Choosing a motor oil grade
Viscosity grade tells you how the oil flows at cold start and at operating temperature. The owner’s manual names the grade and specification your engine needs, and that is the first check before buying any oil. A universal oil can be used only where its grade matches that requirement.
Synthetic oils generally keep their flow better at low temperatures and resist breakdown under heat, which suits engines that run hard or work in traffic. Oil change intervals still matter, and a filter rated for the chosen oil should be fitted with each change.
Track or racing use places greater heat and load on the oil. If the engine is used on a racing circuit, change the oil more often than a street schedule, and check the oil level after each session. Dirty oil, low level or a warning light all signal the need for attention.
