Housing and gasket care
A thermostat housing is a cast part that bolts to the front of the cylinder head and carries coolant from the upper radiator hose. Its sealing surfaces can warp or pit over time, and a worn surface will weep coolant even when the gasket is new. Clean the mating faces with a plastic scraper rather than a steel tool so the sealing surface stays intact.
Because the housing, thermostat and gasket work together, replacing them as one kit is common when the old housing shows corrosion or cracks. Check the upper radiator hose and clamps at the same time, and refill with the coolant your engine requires. Tighten the housing bolts evenly and recheck for leaks after the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Look for white or green crust around the housing edge

- Recheck coolant level after the first warm-up

The 2003 Liberty and Wrangler TJ years before 2003 are not on this list. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
