Seal replacement on older CJs
An input shaft seal keeps oil in the front of the transmission where the input shaft leaves the case. On early CJ transmissions the seal can harden over years of service, letting oil drip onto the bellhousing or clutch area. Because the clutch usually has to come out for access, many owners replace the seal at the same time as the clutch parts.
Check the shaft surface where the seal rides for grooves, rust or scoring, since a worn surface can cause a new seal to leak. Drive the seal in squarely with the lip facing the correct direction. Fill the transmission to the correct level and check for seepage after a short drive.
