Replacing a front seal
A front bearing retainer seal works against a shaft that rotates constantly, so its lip gradually hardens and wears. Leaks usually show up as oil collecting at the front of the transmission, often on the transfer case side or along the crossmember. Because the lubricant is under splash and pressure, a small weep can grow quickly if it is ignored.
Before fitting, clean the bore and check the shaft surface where the lip rides. Grooves, rust or scoring can cause a new seal to leak, so smooth or replace the sleeve if it is worn. Install the seal square and evenly with a proper seal driver, and use a fresh gasket at the retainer. Refill the lubricant to the correct level once the transmission is back together.
