Overview
The Crown Automotive J0804533 is a steering gear sector shaft for 1950-1952 Jeep Willys Truck models. The sector shaft is the gear output shaft that transfers steering motion to the steering linkage.
Crown Automotive makes replacement parts for Jeep vehicles, including many items the factory no longer makes.
Key features
- Replacement steering gear sector shaft for 1950-1952 Jeep Willys Truck
- It is a direct fit.
- Crown part number J0804533 identifies the shaft
- Part of a Crown replacement range that the company says includes factory-discontinued items
Steering gear output and wear
The sector shaft is the output of the steering gear. It carries the motion from the worm and sector gears into the pitman arm, so wear here shows up as slop at the steering wheel or a loose feel on center. On older Willys trucks, sector shafts and their bushings often wear together, and the gear housing may need inspection at the same time.
Before disassembly, clean the outside of the steering gear and mark the position of the pitman arm on the shaft so the steering can be set back to center. Check the sector shaft spline and the arm for wear, and inspect the seals for leaks. If the shaft is rebuilt, a new seal is a sensible addition.
- Check steering play at the wheel with the front wheels off the ground
- Look for oil around the sector shaft seal
- Replace worn pitman arm splines with the shaft if they show wear
