Signs the upper bearing is worn
The upper bearing supports the top of the steering shaft where it passes through the column. Over time it can wear, allowing the wheel to move up and down or side to side, and that play is often felt before it is seen. A worn upper bearing can also make the steering wheel feel loose on center and can produce a rattle or knock when turning.
Before pulling the column, check whether the steering wheel is loose on the shaft, verify the column is not bent, and inspect the lock and ignition components near the bearing. Work with the battery disconnected and support the wheel so it does not drop and strain the shaft. If the column has taken impacts, have it inspected before reusing other parts.
Lubricate the bearing area with a suitable grease during reassembly, and keep the column cover fasteners clear so they do not rub against the shaft. Recheck steering play after the first few drives, since a freshly fitted bearing often settles into place.
- Check steering wheel play before removal
- Inspect the column for bends or impact damage
- Replace worn retaining hardware with the bearing
- Recheck steering play after the first drives
