The kit includes bushings and seals, which are the wear items in a sector shaft assembly.

Key features

  • Includes bushings and seals
  • Fits CJ3, CJ5 and CJ6 models plus Willys CJ-2 through CJ-6 and Willys MB
  • Crown Automotive part number J0805123 with UPC 848399079111

Rebuild considerations

A sector shaft kit replaces the bushings and seals that wear first inside the steering gear. Worn bushings allow the shaft to rock, which shows up as slop at the steering wheel, and worn seals let lubricant escape from the housing. Because both parts sit inside the gear, the job is most often done while the gear is out of the vehicle and disassembled.

When planning the work, plan for the shaft itself to be inspected at the same time. A kit does little good if the shaft surfaces are scored or the splines are worn. Clean the housing thoroughly, use fresh gear oil when reassembling, and set the mesh carefully so the steering turns smoothly from lock to lock.

  • Inspect the shaft surfaces alongside the bushings
  • Clean the housing before reassembly
  • Refill with fresh gear oil and check for seepage

Signs include excess play at the steering wheel, a rough or notchy feel in the steering, and oil seeping from the gear housing near the shaft. A kit is a good fit when these show up and the shaft is still sound.
