Overview
The Crown Automotive J4006495 is a chrome shifter knob lock nut for the Dana 300 transfer case, made to fit several Jeep models from 1980 to 1986.
The nut holds the shifter knob on the shifter, so the Dana 300 transfer case is the application named on this part.
Key features
- Chrome finish
- Designed for the Dana 300 transfer case
- Fits multiple Jeep CJ, Cherokee, J-truck, Scrambler and Wagoneer models
- Crown Automotive part number J4006495
Installing the shifter knob nut
The lock nut secures the shifter knob so it does not loosen during shifts. Because it sits at the top of the shifter, the threads and the knob fit matter more than the finish. Clean the threads before fitting and make sure the knob seats fully before tightening.
If the knob rattles or turns after tightening, the nut or the knob threads may be worn. Replacing the nut alone may not fix a stripped knob, so inspect both. Shifter knobs on older trucks often sit on worn threads, and a chrome finish does not protect against wear in those threads.
- Inspect threads on both the nut and the knob for stripping
- Use a nut that matches the shifter threads rather than forcing a fit
- Check that the knob does not bind on the boot or console
- Re-check tightness after the first few drives
