Key features

  • Rear driver-side wheel cylinder
  • Fits 10 inch or 11 inch brakes
  • Direct-fit application for forward-control and Willys trucks

Wheel cylinders and brake fluid

A drum brake wheel cylinder converts hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder into force on the brake shoes. Inside, a piston and seals move with each pedal press. When the seals wear, fluid can leak past them onto the shoe linings, which reduces braking and can contaminate the drum surface. Leaks at the boot or along the bleeder are often the first visible sign.

Wheel cylinders are commonly replaced in pairs on older axles, and the brake shoes, springs and drum are inspected in the same job. Old fluid can carry moisture and corrosion, so flush the system when a cylinder is changed. Bleed the brakes in the correct order and test the pedal before driving.

  • Check the boots for cracks or leaks
  • Inspect the shoes for fluid contamination
  • Replace brake fluid during the repair

Questions & Answers

Which side does the Crown J0802951 fit?

It is the rear driver-side cylinder. The passenger side uses a separate wheel cylinder with its own part number, so order a matching part for that side.

What brake sizes does the J0802951 fit?

It fits 10 inch or 11 inch brakes, so measure or check the drum size on your vehicle before ordering. Matching the drum size keeps the cylinder bore and piston in proper contact with the shoes.

Does the J0802951 fit a Jeep Gladiator JT?

No. The Gladiator listing is for 1962–1963 models only, so the 2020 and later Gladiator JT is not covered by this wheel cylinder.

Which Willys models use the J0802951?

The 1-Ton, Jeepster, Sedan Delivery and Utility Wagon, each for the year ranges Crown Automotive lists, along with the FC150, FC170 and early Gladiator.

How often should drum brake wheel cylinders be checked?

Check them whenever the drums are removed or the brake pedal feels soft or sinks. Look for leaking fluid around the boot and wetness on the shoe linings. Regular inspection during other brake work helps catch small leaks early.
