Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive master clutch kit, part TXYZ9499F, is for the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. It fits the 1994–1999 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), the 1997–1999 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) and the 1994–1995 Jeep Wrangler (YJ).

The kit is a master set with a pressure plate, clutch disc, release bearing, pilot bearing and clutch release fork in one package. Those parts make up the clutch hardware apart from the flywheel.

Key features

  • For the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
  • Includes a pilot bearing and clutch release fork
  • Pressure plate, clutch disc and release bearing included
  • Fits Cherokee XJ, Wrangler TJ and Wrangler YJ

Before clutch replacement

A clutch is rarely replaced on its own in a job like this. The flywheel is a common concern: a glazed or heat-scored surface will shorten the life of the new disc, and it may need resurfacing or replacement. Measure the flywheel surface and check the ring gear teeth before the new clutch goes on.

Check the rear main seal and the transmission input shaft for leaks and wear while the transmission is out. A leak at the crank seal can soak the new disc with oil and cause slipping. The hydraulic release parts, including the slave cylinder and fluid lines, should be inspected and bled, since air in the line can make the pedal feel spongy.

Clean the flywheel and pressure plate mating surfaces thoroughly, and keep grease off the friction disc. Use grease sparingly on the input shaft splines and release fork pivot points. After the first few drives, check the pedal feel and listen for chatter or slipping under load.

  • Inspect the flywheel surface and ring gear
  • Check the rear main seal for leaks
  • Bleed the hydraulic clutch line
  • Keep grease off the friction disc

Questions & Answers

Does the Crown TXYZ9499F master clutch kit include a pilot bearing?

Yes. The kit includes a pilot bearing, along with the pressure plate, clutch disc, release bearing and clutch release fork. The flywheel is not part of the kit.

Is this clutch kit for the Wrangler TJ?

Yes, for 1997–1999 Wrangler TJ models with the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. The Cherokee XJ and Wrangler YJ are also listed.

Does the kit include the flywheel?

No. The flywheel is not included in this kit, which covers the clutch parts only. Check the flywheel surface and condition during installation, since the flywheel stays with the vehicle and is not part of the kit.

Is a new pilot bearing worth fitting with a new clutch?

Yes. A pilot bearing is usually replaced along with the clutch, since it is a small part that wears with the transmission input shaft. Inspect the old bearing for rough rotation or play before fitting the new one. Replacing it during the same job avoids pulling the transmission again later.
