Replacing a pan gasket
A lower gasket seals the oil pan to the engine block, keeping oil in the pan where the pump can draw it. Pan gaskets are compressed by bolts around the perimeter, and over time they can harden, shrink or leak at the corners where the seal meets the block. A one piece pan gasket covers the full perimeter, so a single part can replace the whole seal.
Before pulling the pan, drain the oil, move any dipstick tube out of the way, and clean the mating surfaces thoroughly. Old gasket material left on the block or pan will prevent a flat seal. Inspect the pan for cracks or bent flanges, and check the bolts for stretching or corrosion before reusing them.
Since the pan is off, many owners also replace the drain plug gasket and the oil filter. Tighten the pan bolts in a crisscross order using the torque values in a service manual, then refill and check for leaks after the first run.
