Overview
The Crown Automotive SET47 is an inner disc brake spindle bearing set with a Timken inner bearing for the front of the 1981-1985 Jeep Scrambler. It is a direct fit for that model.
An inner bearing sits closer to the differential on the front hub. This set is for disc brake front hubs and comes as the inner bearing only, with no outer bearing or seal.
The Scrambler, the short-bed CJ pickup built in the early 1980s, is the only model this set is made for.
The SET47 is a narrow application, because it is listed only for the Scrambler built from 1981 to 1985. Anyone working on a CJ5 or CJ7 with disc brakes should not assume it fits, and should compare it with the SET45 and the bearings already on the vehicle.
Crown describes itself as a maker and distributor of replacement parts for Jeep vehicles, including many factory-discontinued items.
Crown supplies only an inner bearing in the SET47, so the outer bearing and any seal are separate parts. Pair it with a matching cup and seal for the hub, and compare it with the bearing you remove because Crown gives no dimensions.
Key features
- Inner disc brake spindle bearing set
- Timken inner bearing
- Front position
- Direct fit, per Crown
- Fits the Scrambler only
Inner and outer bearings
A front hub carries two tapered bearings, one inboard and one outboard, and they share the load from the wheel. The inner bearing takes a large share of the load when the vehicle corners, so wear there can show up as a wobble at the brake rotor. Both bearings should be inspected together, because a worn one can cause the other to run unevenly.
Disc brake Scramblers need a clean rotor surface and firm caliper mounting as well as good bearings. When the hub is opened, check the rotor for runout and the pads for even wear, since a loose bearing can make a rotor appear warped. Replace the grease seal whenever the bearing is repacked, and keep grease off the rotor and pads.
Pack the bearing with a suitable high temperature wheel bearing grease and set the preload correctly. A bearing set too tight will heat up on the road, and one set too loose will rattle or wander. Recheck the adjustment after the first few drives, since the bearing settles as it runs in.
- Replace the grease seal with the bearing
- Inspect both hub bearings for play
- Check rotor runout after hub work
- Keep grease off pads and rotor

The manufacturer fitment list for part SET47 covers: 1981–1985 Jeep Scrambler.
Not listed: the CJ5, the CJ7 and the Wrangler, and Scramblers outside 1981-1985. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
The set is the inner bearing for a disc brake front hub; verify that your Scrambler has disc brakes and the matching spindle bearing size.
