How the resistor fails
Blower resistors drop voltage across a set of resistive coils, which gives the fan its lower speed steps. The high setting usually bypasses the resistor, so a failed unit often leaves the fan working on high only, or not at all on the lower steps. Heat and age can crack the coil wiring, and corroded connectors add resistance that makes the problem come and go.
When replacing one, check the connector pins, the harness plug and the mounting area before fitting the new part. Clean any green corrosion and use dielectric grease on the terminals. Running the blower through every speed after installation confirms each step works.
