Before you fit a strap kit
A fuel tank strap holds the tank against its mounting points and keeps it from shifting over rough ground. On an older CJ or Wrangler YJ, the straps carry the tank’s weight through every bump, so their condition matters as much as the tank itself. Before fitting a new kit, support the tank safely, clean the mounting surfaces and check the frame brackets for cracks or heavy rust.
Straps weaken over time from road salt, moisture and constant vibration. Signs of a worn set include flaking or thinning metal, cracked or flattened padding, loose hardware and a tank that rocks when pushed. When the tank is out, check the fuel lines, filler neck and sending unit wiring as well, since they are often disturbed during removal. Replace the hardware with the straps so the set goes together evenly.
