Signs a CV boot needs replacing
A CV boot protects the joint from dirt, water and road grit, and it holds the grease the joint needs to move smoothly. A boot that is cracked, split or swollen allows grease to escape and contaminants to enter, which wears the joint quickly. Check the boots by hand during every oil change or tire rotation, and look for grease spattered on the suspension or wheel.
When the boot is replaced, clean the joint thoroughly and repack it with fresh grease before fitting the new clamps. Make sure the boot sits without twisting and that the clamps are seated firmly. Replacing a boot early is usually less work than replacing a joint after dirt has worn it.
