Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive 83506249 is a synchronizer sleeve for the 3rd and 4th gear positions of the AX15 manual transmission. A synchronizer sleeve is the sliding collar that moves over the hub to engage the selected gear.

The sleeve covers 1989–1997 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), 1989–1992 Jeep Comanche, 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) Base and Laredo, 1997 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) Sport and 1988–1995 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) models.

Key features

  • Synchronizer sleeve for AX15 3rd and 4th gear
  • Sleeve design, not a ring or spring
  • Part number 83506249
  • Listed by Crown Automotive as Direct Fit

Sleeve wear and engagement

The sleeve carries the shifting load from the fork to the hub, so its internal teeth and splines take steady wear over the life of the transmission. Worn teeth can let the gear slip partway into engagement, causing popping out of gear or a notchy feel between third and fourth. Inspect the sleeve for rounded teeth, chipped edges and polished spots where it contacts the blocking ring. Compare the sleeve with the hub it rides on, since a worn hub can damage a new sleeve quickly.

Because the sleeve works alongside the rings and springs, many rebuilds replace several parts for the same gear positions together. Make sure the sleeve slides freely over the hub before reassembly, and check that the shift fork engages the groove evenly. Once the transmission is back in the vehicle, shift slowly through each gear to confirm it stays in position under light throttle.

Questions & Answers

Which gears is the 83506249 sleeve for?

It covers the AX15 3rd and 4th gear positions. It is a synchronizer sleeve with part number 83506249 and UPC 848399026788, and it is a direct fit for the Jeep models named above.

Does this sleeve fit a Jeep Cherokee XJ?

Yes. 1989–1997 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is listed in Base, Briarwood, Classic, Country, Laredo, Limited, Pioneer, SE and Sport trims. Confirm your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Does the item include a ring or spring?

No. Crown Automotive describes only the sleeve. Other synchronizer parts are separate items and are not included, so confirm what else your gear rebuild needs.

Can a sleeve be replaced by itself?

It can be, if the hub and rings are in good shape. A worn sleeve that rides on a worn hub often causes repeat problems, so inspect both before ordering a single part.
