Overview
The Crown Automotive 83506252 is a brass style synchronizer ring for the 1st and 2nd gear positions of the AX15 manual transmission. It is tied to a 4.0L 6 cylinder engine, and two rings are required.
It fits Jeep Cherokee XJ, Comanche, Grand Cherokee ZJ, Grand Wagoneer SJ, Wagoneer SJ, Wrangler TJ and Wrangler YJ vehicles. Each ring has three alignment notches and 36 teeth, and it measures 3/8 inch thick.
Key features

- Three alignment notches
- 36 teeth
- 3/8 inch thick

Ring wear and gear timing
Synchronizer rings in the 1st and 2nd gear positions work by friction, bringing the gear to matching speed before the dog teeth engage. Brass rings wear gradually, and worn rings show up as grinding or difficulty finding first or second, especially when the transmission is cold. Because the rings and sleeves work together, examine the cone surfaces on the gears and the hub teeth while the gearbox is open. Clean, even wear on the cone is a good sign, while glazing or flat spots point to replacement.
Two rings are fitted, so replacing both at the same time keeps the 1st and 2nd synchro set balanced. Check the alignment notches against the hub during reassembly, and confirm each ring sits on the correct gear position before closing the case. Once the rebuild is complete, change the gearbox fluid to the type the transmission needs and drive gently at first to let the new surfaces bed in.

Installation notes
Two rings are needed, and they sit inside the transmission, so replacement starts with transmission disassembly. A transmission shop should handle the work and confirm both rings go onto the correct gear positions.
What’s included
Two rings are needed for the AX15 1st and 2nd gear positions, as Crown Automotive notes. No other hardware is stated.
