What a caliper does
The caliper holds the brake pads and the piston or pistons. When you press the pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes the piston and squeezes the pads against the rotor. A caliper that sticks, leaks or drags can cause pulling, uneven pad wear, overheating and a soft pedal.
Signs a caliper needs attention
- The vehicle pulls to one side when braking.
- One wheel is much hotter than the others after a drive.
- Brake fluid is visible around the caliper or a torn piston boot.
- Pads are worn unevenly, with one pad thinner than the other.
- A pedal that sinks or feels spongy.
Choosing the right caliper
Position and side matter because calipers are not interchangeable between front and rear or left and right, in many cases. Listings often specify driver or passenger side, and for rear calipers whether the model has an integrated parking brake. Look at the application, such as year range and model, since the mounting and rotor size vary even within one model line.
Loaded calipers arrive with the bracket and sometimes hardware, while bare calipers need your existing pads and parts transferred. Performance 1-Click kits combine calipers with pads and rotors, giving matched components, and some target towing and heavy-duty use.
Rear disc conversions
Disc conversion kits replace rear drums on certain axles to improve stopping consistency and heat management. Read the listing for which axle types and brake systems are supported, and confirm whether it includes calipers, rotors, brackets and hardware.
Installation notes
Brakes are a safety system, so professional installation is wise unless you have experience. Bleed the system after replacing a caliper, use new hardware and copper washers where specified, and follow torque specifications for the caliper bracket and banjo bolts. Replace pads and rotors in axle pairs, and check the pedal and braking before driving. Confirm fitment for your exact year, make, model and brake package.
Brake system health beyond the caliper
A caliper replacement is a good time to look at the rest of the system. Check the brake hoses for cracks, bulges or stiffness, since an old hose can restrict fluid and cause a caliper to drag. Inspect the slide pins and boots, which should move freely and be lightly lubricated with brake-safe grease, and check the pad abutment clips for rust. Look at the rotor surface for grooves, heat spots and thickness, and measure it against the minimum marked on the rotor. Examine the master cylinder fluid level and color, since dark fluid suggests it is time for a flush. Heavy vehicles that tow or run large tires put extra load on the brakes, so make sure every component is in good condition. After the work, bed in new pads using the maker's procedure.
Mistakes to avoid include reusing crushed copper washers, mixing up left and right bleeder positions, letting the caliper hang by the brake hose, and skipping the bed-in procedure. Support the caliper with a wire or stand, and clean the mounting bracket surfaces before reassembly.

Disc Brake Calipers FAQ
Should I replace calipers in pairs?
It is generally recommended to replace both calipers on an axle, along with pads, so braking is even. A new caliper beside a worn one can create uneven pressure and pulling. Ask a mechanic if the other side shows signs of wear.
Do I need to bleed the brakes after changing a caliper?
Yes. Opening the hydraulic system lets air in, which makes the pedal feel soft. Bleed the brakes following the vehicle's procedure and the fluid type specified in the owner's manual.
What is a loaded caliper?
A loaded caliper comes with the bracket and, in many cases, pads and hardware already fitted. Bare calipers require you to transfer parts from the old unit. Check the product page for what is included.
Can I tell which side a caliper is for?
Listings often say driver or passenger side, and front or rear. Bleeder screw position and mounting differ, so order the matching side and position, and verify against your vehicle's specifications.
