Description

Overview

The Power Stop Z36-1274 is a rear metallic Z36 Truck and Tow disc brake pad set for the 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler (JK), 2008-2012 Jeep Liberty (KJ), 2018 Wrangler (JL) and 2007-2011 Dodge Nitro.

The Z36 pads have a coefficient of friction 17 percent higher than OE pads, which suits drivers who tow trailers, haul loads or drive in the hills.

Key features

  • Metallic pad for trucks and SUVs with higher gross vehicle weights
  • Made for driving in the hills, hauling loads and towing trailers
  • Extreme pad bite to avoid high temperature brake fade
  • Coefficient of friction 17 percent higher than OE pads
  • Thermal scorched, chamfered and slotted like OE
  • Powdercoated backing plate
  • Noise insulating shims
  • Hi-Temp lubricant included

On the trail

Jeep Wranglers and the Liberty see a lot of low-speed crawling, uneven ground and steep descents, where brakes can run hot even without towing. Rear pads help control speed on those descents, so a pad that tolerates heat is useful off road as well as on pavement. Long downhill runs on dirt put steady heat into the rear rotors, which is when fade tends to show up.

When the pads are replaced, look at the rear rotors, the caliper slide pins and the parking brake setup. A worn rotor can make a new pad pulse, and seized slide pins can cause uneven wear that shows up after only a few trips. Mud and sand can work into the caliper, so rinse the wheel area after deep water crossings and check for grit before it becomes a squeal.

Questions & Answers

Does the Z36-1274 fit a Jeep Wrangler JK?

Yes. The Jeep Wrangler (JK) fits 2007-2018 as a rear pad, covering both two-door and four-door models. The 2018 JL Wrangler is also covered. Earlier TJ models need a separate fit check.

What comes with Power Stop Z36-1274 brake pads?

Expect Hi-Temp lubricant and noise insulating shims in the box. The pads are thermal scorched, chamfered and slotted like OE, and have a powdercoated backing plate. Calipers are not included.

Are Z36 Truck and Tow pads suited to towing?

Yes. The Z36 is a Truck and Tow pad with extreme pad bite, made for heavy use such as hill driving, hauling and trailer towing.

How do I tell when rear brake pads need replacing?

Look for pads worn down to the minimum thickness, a high-pitched squeal from the wear indicator, or grinding that suggests the backing plate is touching the rotor. Check the rotors for scoring or a lip at the edge, and inspect the pads through the caliper window at each service interval.
