Overview
The Omix-ADA brake shoe retainer plate, item 16751.01, is a drum brake hardware part for 10 x 1-3/4 inch brakes. Retainer plates hold the brake shoes in place. It is built to original specifications and comes with a limited five year warranty.
Why retainer plates matter
Retainer plates, sometimes called hold-down plates, sit behind the brake shoes and anchor them to the backing plate. They keep the shoes aligned with the drum so braking force spreads evenly across the lining.
Because the plate carries the shoe load through its mounting point, a bent or cracked plate can let the shoe shift. Look for worn holes, rust around the pin, and grooves where the shoe edge rubs. Replace the plate when any of these appear, and check the hold-down spring at the same time.
When rebuilding a drum brake, clean the backing plate surface before fitting the new plate. A light coat of brake-specific lubricant on the pin contact points helps the parts move freely without contaminating the friction surface.
