Setting up a minor kit
A minor installation kit is built for a gear change that keeps the existing bearings and carrier. Setup is detailed work: pinion depth is set first, then preload, then backlash, and each step affects the others. Shims are chosen by measurement, so the old parts should be kept until the new setup is confirmed.
Setting up a TJ or LJ axle without a dial indicator and a proper preload tool makes accurate setup hard. Many owners send the carriers to a shop for the final setup and only do the disassembly themselves.
