Choosing a mounting spot
A four-bolt rubber clamp needs a mounting surface with clear space for every fastener. Before choosing a spot, check behind the panel for wiring, fuel lines and brackets, since drilling into them causes problems that are hard to see later. A flat, rigid surface keeps the clamp from flexing under load.
Large items put more strain on the clamp than small ones, so the bolt pattern matters. Spacing the four bolts evenly across the base helps the clamp hold its shape. Mark all four positions with a template before drilling. Tighten each fastener in turn, then recheck them after the first drives, since vibration can work loose any bolted mount.
- Mark all four positions before drilling
- Check for lines and brackets behind the surface
- Tighten in a cross pattern
