Replacing a worn grommet
A valve cover grommet is a small rubber seal at the cover edge, and it wears over time from heat and oil. Once it hardens or flattens, the cover begins to weep oil at the seam even when the gasket itself is sound. Because the part is inexpensive compared with the cleanup and time, many owners replace it whenever the cover comes off.
Before fitting a new grommet, clean the groove in the cover so it seats evenly and carries no old residue. Check the cover for warping, since a bent cover will leak regardless of a fresh seal. Install the grommet before reinstalling the cover, and tighten the bolts gradually to keep pressure even.
