Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive J0642056 is a driver side tie rod assembly, 19.75 inch long, for Jeep CJ and Willys CJ models. It sits in the left position.

It fits the Willys CJ-2 from 1946–1949, the CJ-3 from 1949–1958, the CJ-5 from 1955–1958, and the CJ-6 from 1956–1958. It also fits the Jeep CJ3 from 1959–1966, the CJ5 and CJ6 from 1959–1971, and the CJ5A and CJ6A from 1966–1968.

Key features

  • Driver side, left position
  • 19.75 inch length
  • Fits nine Jeep CJ and Willys CJ model entries

Driver side steering linkage

The driver side tie rod sets the angle of the front wheel on that side, so wear shows up as wander, pull or a steering wheel that is off-center. On older CJ and Willys linkage, the joints and rod ends carry most of the wear, and a single worn end can alter the toe setting. Compare the new assembly with the old one in length and mounting points before fitting.

Vehicles that have seen trail use often show wear in the ball joints and boots first, so inspect those parts when the front end is apart. Grease the joints after installation and keep the boots intact to slow wear. Alignment should be checked once the new piece is in place.

  • Measure the original length before fitting
  • Check the rod end boots for splits
  • Inspect the ball joints at the same time

Questions & Answers

Is the J0642056 a driver side tie rod?

Yes. It is a driver side tie rod in the left position, with a length of 19.75 inch. Confirm your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Does it fit a Jeep CJ7?

The listed fitment covers the CJ3, CJ5, CJ5A, CJ6, CJ6A and the Willys CJ-2, CJ-3, CJ-5 and CJ-6 models, but not the CJ7. Check your year and model against that list.

What length is this tie rod assembly?

The length is 19.75 inch. Compare the assembly with the original part before installing it, and check that the mounting points line up with your steering.

Why do CJ steering joints wear out?

Older steering joints wear from age, dirt and road shock. Worn parts add play that makes the steering wander, so inspect the joints and boots whenever the front end is serviced. Keeping them greased and sealed slows wear.
