Rebuilding a T14 synchro set
A synchronizer repair kit replaces the parts that wear first in a T14 gearbox, so the gears can match speed and engage cleanly. In older CJ transmissions, worn blocking rings often show up as grinding on downshifts into second or third, and worn keys can let the hub slide out of alignment. When the case is open, check the gear cones, the hub teeth and the sliding sleeves, since they wear with the rings. Parts that look fine can still be worn enough to undo the benefit of new rings.
Many owners rebuild the whole synchro set at once, using the kit’s rings, keys and springs together so the wear stays even. Clean every part thoroughly before assembly, and lubricate the synchronizers with the gearbox fluid the transmission needs. After reinstalling, test each gear in neutral before a road test, and recheck the fluid level after a short drive.
