Spring eyes and bushing wear
The spring eye is where a leaf spring pivots on its bushing, so worn bushings let the spring move side to side and can create clunks or squeaks. Rubber bushings wear as they age, especially with grit, heat and road salt. A worn bushing may show cracks, flattened sides or visible play at the eye when the vehicle is lifted.
When replacing a bushing, clean the eye and bore, check the spring bolt and shackle hardware, and replace any parts with play or corrosion. Using a press or a proper tool helps keep the bushing square. Lubrication is not an option for non-greaseable bushings, so keeping the eye clean matters more. Recheck the bolts after the first drive, because settling can loosen hardware.
