Remanufactured gear considerations
A power steering gear turns steering wheel input into movement at the pitman arm, so its internal parts carry steady load every time the vehicle turns. Over years, seals can weep, the gear can develop play at the wheel, and the steering can feel vague on center. A remanufactured unit has been rebuilt with replacement internal parts, which is why it is often used as a direct swap for a worn original on older Jeeps.
Before fitting one, inspect the pitman arm, drag link, tie rod ends and steering box mounting bolts. Worn links can push wear into a new gear, and a loose mount will affect steering feel. Check the fluid lines and hose fittings for leaks after installation, and refill and bleed the system as the vehicle’s service manual describes.
