Pump housing and oil flow
The oil pump in a transfer case circulates fluid to the gears and bearings, so a faulty pump housing can starve parts of lubrication. Signs of trouble include whining under load, rising case temperatures and fluid that looks dark or contains metal. Because the pump sits inside the case, its condition is easiest to check when the case is open.
