Replacing the adjusting hole plug

The adjusting hole sits in the backing plate of a rear drum brake and gives access to the star wheel adjuster. A rubber plug keeps dirt, water and road spray out of that opening, which helps the adjuster turn freely and reduces corrosion on the threads. When the plug is missing, cracked or hardened, moisture can get in and the adjuster may seize over time, leaving the shoes too far from the drum.

Plugs usually come out during brake service, because the drum must be removed or the adjuster turned through the hole. Pushing a new plug in fully, without tearing it, keeps the seal intact. Clean the hole and the adjuster threads before fitting, and check that the plug sits flush so it does not work loose on rough roads. If the rubber is brittle or split, replace it rather than reusing it.

  • Replace plugs that are cracked, split or hardened
  • Clean the adjusting hole before fitting the new plug
  • Seat the plug fully so it does not work loose
  • Adjust the rear brakes after drum work and test the pedal

Questions & Answers

What is the Crown J3201957?

It is a rubber plug for the brake adjusting hole at the rear. It fits a wide range of Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Chrysler and Mitsubishi vehicles.

Does the J3201957 fit a Jeep Wrangler JK?

Yes. The 2007–2018 Wrangler JK fits this plug, as do the 1998–2006 TJ and the 1987–1995 YJ, so all three Wrangler generations are covered.

Which drum size do CJ applications use with the J3201957?

The 1976–1986 CJ applications use 10 inch x 1-3/4 inch drum brakes. Check the drum size on your CJ against that figure before fitting the plug.

Can a missing adjusting hole plug cause problems?

It can. Water and grit entering the hole may corrode the adjuster, which can stop it turning and leave the shoes sitting too far from the drum. Fitting a sound plug keeps the mechanism protected between brake jobs.

How do you know if the plug has failed?

Look for splits, brittleness or a plug that has fallen out. Rust on the adjuster wheel or visible dirt inside the hole suggests the seal has been lost. Replace the plug at the next brake service.
